No One Needs More Art?
| As a gallery owner, I have the wonderful opportunity to show visitors the historic works of Truro artist Milton Wright, or introduce them to new painters I've discovered. I really enjoy discussing technique, styles of painting, and subject matter to get friends and customers as excited as I am about a beautiful piece of art. More than once, someone has said to me, "I don't really need any more art." My response is usually something like, "I know! Me either.... I actually have paintings in my house stacked against the walls!" But buying art is not simply the same practical need as buying a chair or a lamp. It's an emotional as well as intellectual purchase that stirs something very personal in each of us. It's true that I have more art than I have wall space, and I frequently change the location of pieces, adding and subtracting to create a different mood or feeling in a room...to keep things looking fresh, alive. Today, I woke up and looked at the peaceful summer dune painting by Linda Young that hangs in my bedroom. Then I walked through my living room where Milton Wright's "Fishermen by the Seine" hangs next to Bud Hodgin's "North Truro", next to Del Filardi's welded steel sculpture, I felt centered, happy....for now. I know that upstairs there is a whole world of other pieces to consider, once the light changes, the days are longer, and spring is here. Maybe I'll bring down Milton Wright's "Still Life with Lemons" or that lovely Jerry Farnsworth portrait.... hmmm... or maybe I'll go to a few art openings this weekend. I have a beautiful small bowl that Joe gave me showing the old "Winter Birch" pattern, and I've just copied it. See for yourself, it's a gorgeous pattern!
